You should do this EVERY TIME you see a map!

First ask yourself - What is the obvious about the map? The Literal?

  • Title

  • Date

  • Literal information (read key)

  • Area shown on map

Then, Go Beyond....

  • Are there patterns? What are they and why are they there?

  • Can you make any comparisons?

  • What can you hypothesize?

  • Can you make educated predictions?

  • Evaluate the information you see

  • What conclusions can be drawn?

  • Are there relationships between other places not shown?

  • Are there implications?

  • Is there information missing to help you understand?

And Finally....

  • What does this map help you understand better? How/Why?

  • What other questions do you now have?
