Imagine this: You're throwing a party at your home, invite 5 people and order 2 pizzas. Those 5 people each bring 10 of their closest friends so you now have 50 people in your home and 2 pizzas.

Overpopulation can be a major issue.

It essentially means that there are more people than resources.

Causes:

  1. Increased birth rates

  2. Decreased mortality rates (due to better health care, peace, etc.)

  3. Increase in immigration

Not everyone views overpopulation as a potential reality. (check out these short videos) Others correlate environmental issues such as global warming and resource depletion with overpopulation.

As human geographers, we are concerned with the effects of overpopulation in nations and their impact on the world.

Effects:

  1. Depletion of natural resources

  2. Degradation of environment

  3. Conflict and wars

  4. Rise in unemployment

  5. High cost of living

In the 21st century, one of the most respected solutions or ways to deal with high birth rates is EDUCATION, especially education of girls. The United Nations and many organizations advocate education for girls.

When girls are educated, they tend to

  • Marry later

  • Have less children

  • Train for jobs that bring money in for the family

  • Earn greater respect for their contribution to the family economy
